Expanding
abroad successfully
Adapting to local cultures is vital for international
expansion to succeed
There are two ways to become
international: buy an existing store network or
buy retail space overseas before your competitors
do! Depending on your retail activity, you may
have to rethink your business models and product
ranges as it’s not always possible to simply
transfer strategies from the home market. Avoid
the mistake of thinking that what works well in
one country will work everywhere!

supports Otto Group’s Castro in its
international expansion
Israeli fashion retailer,
Castro, has over 100 stores and a turnover
of $100M. In 2004, faced with competition
from emerging international players in its
home market, Castro decided to expand into
Germany through a joint venture with mail
order company, Hiene. By 2008, Castro will
have 80 stores in Germany alone! Today Castro
has stores in the Ukraine, Russia, Latvia,
Hungary, Switzerland and the Far East.
